Giving life to a new concept idea
Making live Lectures More Interactive with AI
Engaged was a thought-stage project aiming to solve a big classroom problem: student disengagement during live lectures. In order to do that, they meant to design a platform that generated real-time quizzes through AI and the recording of the lectures.

The Challenge
How can we design a tool to keep students engaged without disrupting the classroom flow?
With the new generations, professors face more and more disengaged students due to long theoretical lectures and outdated teaching methods. EngagED solution for this was to use AI to transform passive listening into interactive learning. When they contacted us, their concept idea was 100% defined, so our main focus was to find a way to do it without adding friction to the teaching experience.
Discovery & Research
As you can see, the research findings did not shed much light on the issue, but we were able to corroborate the client's initial hypotheses.
What did yield good results was the inicial concept testing that highlighted two main concerns of the professors. These were the two main points that guided our whole ideation process.
So professors, like Lou, are desperately looking for a tool that helps them keep students attention and increase the class engagement, but without losing control over their class flow and content.
Defining the problem
There is a noticeable gap between teachers’ pedagogical expectations and students’ learning styles.
COMPETITIVE BENCHMARK
We analyzed quiz-generation tools and AI note-taking apps to assess:
➕ Features ➕ UI/UX patterns ➕ Interaction flows ➕ Visual style
Ideation
Taking into consideration the insights we got from the research (like giving professors control and not wanting interruptions) and all the platforms we looked at, our first step was to prioritize the features we needed in the MVP using the MoSCoW method. Considering we were working on an MVP, after the prioritization we decided to focus mainly on the "must have" features. But first, we needed to get over the blank page syndrome, so we realized the Crazy 8s exercise to get ideas out.
Design process
1. Wireframing
We tested the first interactive wireframes with three professors (Luisa, Filipo, and Oscar) to validate the concept.
2. Concept Test
Key Validations
➕ Professors agreed that AI-generated quizzes could help maintain attention and reinforce learning. ➕ The simplicity and clarity of the interface were positively noted. ➕ Professors liked that the tool could be used both live and after class. ➕ The idea of automatic question generation from lecture audio was considered useful and engaging. ➕ The ability to review and edit AI-generated questions before they reach students was a highly appreciated.
Some Considerations
➕ Avoid classroom disruption: questions should appear at moments chosen by the professor. ➕ Privacy and data storage: professors want clarity on where lecture recordings are stored and how they are used. ➕ Option to adjust the number of answer choices in multiple-choice format.
The main concept was validated, and the MVP must focus on control, integration, and minimal friction in the teaching flow.
